When walnuts ripen
We have sorted the varieties by ripening time, so you can choose early, mid-season and late varieties and pick fruit all season long.
Dates are approximate and depend on the year and the area.
Pollination
Walnuts are pollinated by the wind. The varieties are self-fertile, but in some of them the male and female flowers do not open at the same time. That is why you should plant varieties that pollinate each other. We list the pollinators for every variety.
Planting and spacing
Fruit trees go on sale after 15 November, when they are fully dormant. Plant them straight away, before the hard frosts, because autumn planting gives better rooting and growth the following year. If you miss the autumn, plant early in spring. Planting holes should be at least 80 by 80 by 80 centimetres, and the tree goes in at the same depth as it grew in the nursery.
Walnut trees are planted 8 to 10 metres apart in the row and 8 to 12 metres between rows. On less vigorous rootstocks the spacing ranges from 6 by 6 to 6 by 8 metres.
Grafted walnuts bear their first nuts in the third or fourth year after planting and reach full cropping after the eighth year.
